The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire, 25 March, 2011 presents a mid-season view of the landscape as growth begins to assert itself across the scene. Upright tree forms line a pink-toned lane, while fresh grass emerges along the roadside. In the distance, a small structural remnant, a repeated structure in this series, appears at the edge of the composition, and in the foreground, early spring flowers introduce notes of yellow against the surrounding greenery. A roadside marker featuring an equestrian symbol reinforces the rural setting and situates the work within the everyday visual language of the Yorkshire countryside.

Viewers drawn to this work often look more broadly at David Hockney’s use of digital tools to record landscape, particularly across other iPad-based projects such as the Yosemite Suite20 Flowers and Some Bigger Pictures, and My Normandy. Across these series, Hockney combines long-standing observation of nature with the flexibility of digital drawing, allowing him to work directly from life and respond quickly to changes in light, colour, and environment. This approach underpins the coherence of his late digital practice while keeping each series visually and conceptually distinct.

When The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate was first presented at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2012 as part of David Hockney: A Bigger Picture, it marked a significant shift in how Hockney’s digital work was understood. By exhibiting a substantial group of iPad drawings at a large scale within a major public institution, the series moved decisively beyond experimentation and into the realm of fully realised fine art, helping establish digital drawing as a credible and collectable medium with both critical and market recognition, you can read more about The Arrival of Spring market in our 2025 analysis.
